Willow Beauty Celebrates 10 Years of Success in Ballymena
A Ballymena beauty salon is celebrating a major milestone this month, as Willow Beauty marks its 10th anniversary with a special in-salon celebration and a look back on a decade of growth, resilience, and community support.
Founded by local business owner Gillian Matthews, Willow Beauty first opened its doors on 26th March 2016, following a life-changing moment that sparked the decision to take a leap into self-employment. After the announcement of the closure of the Michelin factory in Ballymena, where her husband had built a successful career, the couple faced an uncertain future. Determined to move forward, Gillian turned a long-held ambition of owning her own salon into reality.
What followed was months of planning, determination, and hard work, culminating in the launch of Willow Beauty in the heart of the town.
The early days brought a mix of excitement and nerves. Like many new business owners, there were questions around location, visibility and whether clients would follow. However, with over 12 years of experience working in established salons, Gillian had built the skills, knowledge and loyal client base needed to make the business a success.
Since opening, Willow Beauty has gone from strength to strength. Over the past decade, the salon has developed a strong and loyal customer base, with many clients returning regularly since day one, while continuing to welcome new faces. The business has expanded its treatment offering, built strong relationships with leading brands, and established itself as an exclusive stockist of premium products.
The salon’s success has also been recognised through a number of prestigious awards. These include Ballymena Business Excellence Awards for Best Business Premises, Best Young Person in Business, and Customer Service on two occasions, as well as the Professional Beauty Regional Award for Northern Ireland Boutique Salon of the Year. Creative efforts have also been recognised through awards for Christmas window displays and Ballymena in Bloom presentations.
A key part of Willow Beauty’s success has been its small, dedicated team. Working closely together every day, Gillian and her team have built strong relationships with clients, creating a welcoming and personal experience that sets the salon apart. The focus on a friendly, relaxing environment combined with high-quality products and treatments has helped make Willow Beauty a trusted destination for self-care.
Over the years, the role of beauty treatments has also evolved. What was once considered an occasional luxury is now an important part of everyday wellbeing. For many clients, visiting the salon is seen as essential “me time” – a regular opportunity to relax, unwind and feel good.
The salon’s connection to Ballymena has played a vital role in its journey. Having worked in the town for over 18 years, Gillian has built strong friendships within the local business community and speaks highly of the support available. Organisations such as Ballymena BID and Ballymena Chamber of Commerce have provided encouragement and practical support throughout the years, contributing to the salon’s continued success.
To mark the 10-year milestone, Willow Beauty will host a birthday celebration on the evening of Thursday 26th March. Clients and members of the public are invited to drop in, enjoy some cake, and take part in the festivities, which will include retail discounts, spot prizes and a special birthday raffle.
Reflecting on the milestone, Gillian describes reaching 10 years in business as a proud and emotional achievement. Overcoming self-doubt to pursue her dream, she credits the unwavering support of her husband and parents as being instrumental in her journey.
Looking ahead, Willow Beauty shows no signs of slowing down. With a loyal client base and the same passion that inspired its beginnings, the salon is set to continue growing and evolving for many years to come.
