Ballymena BID invites you to explore Ballymena, our charming and historic town, nestled in the heartland of Co. Antrim. Ballymena is renowned for its rich history, vibrant heritage and has always been regarded as a premier retail, hospitality and tourism destination within N. Ireland.
As we embark on our second “Around our Town” walking tour on Friday 6th September 2024, we’ll be accompanied by local tour guide Alastair Donaghy as we journey through time exploring some historic locations, buildings and landmarks that tell the story of Ballymena’s past. From the bustling markets that have been the town’s lifeblood for centuries to the quaint shops and businesses both past and present…. experience the sense of community spirit, entrepreneurship and industrious nature that have all helped shape Ballymena over many years.
Along the way, we’ll touch on tales of conflict, growth and evolution. Participants will be also be invited to recall the names and locations of as many local businesses as they might remember such as Caulfield’s Fish, Chips and Ice Cream Parlours, Archie McFetridge’s Hardware, Sammy Barr’s Flamingo Ballroom, McAllister’s Bonding Store, The Abercorn Bar, Waveney Laundry, Woolworths, The Clarence Hotel, Cosbies Timber Yard, to name but a few. We’ll explore the contribution they all made to the local community, and the local economy, in days gone by and how the echoes of yesteryear continue to influence and underpin the modern town we see today.
As part of the tour, we’ll make brief stops to experience a “taster” of food and refreshments, kindly provided by a few of Ballymena’s fabulous businesses such as Follow Coffee, Diamonds News Agents, McGroggan’s Ice Cream and Front Page Bar. Participants will also enjoy a bowl of Irish Stew from Barrs Butchers at the final stop The Front Page Bar and be treated to a drink of their choice.
Whether you are a history buff, or simply enjoy a nostalgic walk down memory lane recalling shops, buildings and businesses from bygone days, this tour offers a unique and enriching glimpse into the heart and history of the City of The Seven Towers.
Our “Around Our Town” Walking Tour starts from Follow Coffee on Friday 6th September and is expected to last for 3-3.5 hours. Numbers are limited and tickets, to include tour, food tasting and refreshments, and are priced at a modest £25.00.
